Adelaide's Birth Story

Adelaide Jane Thomas arrived via emergency c-section at 4:01 p.m. on Oct. 3rd, 2012, one day before her due date. I woke up that morning feeling a little different. I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions for the past few days. While I was putting on my makeup that morning, I just felt a little different.  I told Brook and he told me to really pay attention and if whatever I was feeling started coming in waves, to time them.  Maybe I was already feeling contractions that morning.  I don’t really know.  I was training someone at work and I started feeling something every few minutes. It was a strange feeling and it was coming in waves. The feelings weren't painful, but they were fairly consistent.  They were coming every 4 to 5 minutes. Brook told me to start timing them and that I probably would need to pack up my office just in case I didn't come back. He also told the girl I was training to make sure I timed them because he knew I wouldn't do it if someone didn't remind me. I told my boss that I might not be back that afternoon. I went to lunch at noon at Hammontrees with Rachel and Amanda and the contractions kept coming, but they weren't painful yet. Rachel told me that I probably needed to go to the hospital and get checked out, but I didn't think there was anything to worry about and didn't want to make a trip to the hospital to just get sent home.  I thought it was false labor.  Oh- little did I know, she was coming that afternoon! Amanda told me to just go home and relax and to go to the hospital if they got closer together or more intense. I had some boots in my car that I needed to drop off at the cobbler because I knew I would need them when I went back to work after my maternity leave. Rachel and Amanda told me not to drop them off and to go straight home. I called my doula on the way home and she told me to go home and try to relax. She said to just listen to my body and to call her later that afternoon. I got home and just couldn't relax. I was walking around the house like a nervous wreck.  I was in denial that anything was happening.  Brook told me to pack my hospital bag. Let me back up. We found out Adelaide was breech at 37 weeks. I had been doing all kinds of things to try to encourage her turn.  I wanted to give her a chance to turn. I also really didn't want a c-section. I wanted to have a natural birth. We even took classes at a local midwifery to prepare. Anyway, every day, twice a day, I was lying upside down on an ironing board for 20 minutes, doing breech tilts, putting cold and warm packs on my stomach, putting earphones down low, shining a flashlight down low, etc.  I even quit going to Crossfit and started walking every day.  The owner at La Huerta, Guadalupe, told me to walk a lot and that might help her turn.  At our last appt., she was still breech and my doctor said at 40 weeks, I would have to schedule a c-section b/c she wouldn’t let me go past 41 weeks.  I was convinced she would be late.  I was so wrong.  So, since I was convinced she would be late, I hadn’t really packed a bag yet.  Then I got the brilliant idea to wash my hair.  I had it up in a bun because it was dirty.  My contractions really started getting intense and I had to lean over the bathroom counter and breathe through them.  I asked Brook if that was normal.  Apparently, I had forgotten everything we learned at childbirth class.  I told him to call Sara, our doula, just in case.  He had already done so.  Smart guy.  Washing my hair was such a challenge b/c the contractions were coming every 2 to 3 minutes at that point.  I would yell at Brook from the shower when one was starting.  Then I would tell him when it started fading away.  I managed to get it washed, but I just couldn’t dry it.  The contractions were coming so fast and they were incredibly intense.  Around 2:45 (I think), we decided to go to the hospital.  Knowing she was breech, we needed to get there fairy quickly.  Brook had already packed everything in the car.  He’s a great packer and list maker.  We told the poor animals good bye and got in the car.  The ride to the hospital was quite the ordeal.  Contractions in the back seat of a car are no fun.  Poor Brook was calling our parents and friends letting them all know we were headed to the hospital.  Then, he missed the turn.  I very loudly pointed it out to him.  Bless his heart, I’m sure I was not being very nice to him and he was trying to drive and call everyone at the same time!  We arrived at the hospital.  I had a contraction at the car, in the lobby, and in the elevator.   We walked into triage and the nurse said, “So do we think we are contracting?” in a voice that to me seemed a little snarky like she didn’t think I was having contractions.  I got through a few questions and then it happened.  A big gush of fluid all over me and the floor.  My water broke right there in triage.  How convenient.  They looked at me and said, “Oh, I guess you really are in labor.”  They moved me to the room and had me change into a gown.  I told the nurse helping me that she was breech.  I got on the bed and start having another contraction.  Those next few were probably the most intense things I’ve ever felt in my life.  Not fun at all especially since I was on my back.  One of the nurses checked me and I heard her say, “I think I feel her foot in the birth canal.” to the other nurse.  Then another nurse checked me and said the same thing.  There were about 3 or 4 nurses in the room now.  Then they started moving really fast.  They let Brook in and I remember feeling nauseated.  They put an oxygen mask on me and kept telling me to breathe through the contractions.  I remember holding one of the nurses hands and squeezing it so hard.  I was trying to breathe, but it was so difficult.  Then, the anesthesiologist came in and gave me the news.  There was no time for an epidural.  She was coming now and they were going to have to put me under general anesthesia.  At that point, I was so scared that I didn’t care that I wouldn’t be awake for her birth.  I just wanted them to get her out.  Also, during this time, they inserted my catheter, so I felt that.  It wasn’t bad compared to the contractions.  They wheeled me out of triage and down the hall.  I think I was holding Brook’s hand and we barely said goodbye to each other.  The operating room was so cold and scary and LOUD.  There were so many people in there!  My contractions were so intense and close together.  I think I've said that 100000 times.  They moved me onto the operating table and a nurse told me that I would be asleep soon and I wouldn’t feel anything.  I was so scared.  I kept asking if she was okay.  I started counting backwards from 100 and then I woke up in the recovery room.  I asked if my daughter was okay and I’ll never forget the relief I felt when they said, “Yes, she is fine.”  I kept asking when I could see her and Brook.  Finally, after about 30 minutes, they came to visit me.  I met Adelaide for the first time.  She was perfect.  It was a bit surreal.  She was inside me just that morning and then she was there with us.  The head nurse was nice enough to bring her in the recovery room so I could nurse her.  She took some pictures of us too and I am so grateful to have those pictures.  Looking back, I am so glad we left for the hospital when we did.  All of the nurses and doctors were wonderful.  We love her so much.  She brings us so much joy.  We are very blessed.  Sorry, the pics are sideways.  I can't figure out how to rotate them.

Cravings

Everyone asks if I'm craving anything particular since becoming pregnant.  I guess I would say the main thing is ice cream.  Although, I ate plenty of ice cream before I was pregnant, so that's not anything new.  Since it is so hot outside, I've also been craving watermelon.  White powdered donuts sounds so delicious, but I've resisted buying them because I know I'll eat the entire box!  I've also indulged in Feltner Brothers a couple of times.  I've eaten a few Bliss cupcakes.  I've also made a homemade banana pudding.  I can't drink enough of the Great Value Raspberry Lemonade.  I've already gone through 12 quarts in 2 weeks.  I guess you would say my cravings are typical of a lady expecting.

The Adventures of Gus Gus

A couple of weeks ago, I was getting ready for work. I looked down and saw a little mouse in the corner of the bathroom. Naturally, I squealed like a little girl and stood up on my stool in case the mouse decided to run across my feet. The cats didn't see him at first and they didn't understand why I was freaking out. I yelled at Brook to come get the mouse, but he quickly ran back into the wall. The next day he appeared again and this time the cats were in the bathroom with me. They managed to chase him around the bathroom, but he ended up escaping again. I decided to name the mouse Gus Gus. Brook told me that naming him was a mistake because I might get attached, blah blah blah. We set up a mouse trap but it didn't work. We moved it from the bathroom to the kitchen. The cats kept sitting in front of the oven. We suspect Gus was living under or behind it. A few days later, the trap in the kitchen was gone. I asked Brook where he moved it and he said he saw Gus in our bedroom the night before. EEEEEEEKKKKK!!! Apparently, he crawled underneath our door (what the cats were doing at the time, I don't know, but they are obviously no good at mouse catching!). Brook didn't want to wake me because he knew I would've freaked out. Yes, I would have. Anyway, Brook discovered that Gus liked butterscotch candy so he put a butterscotch candy in the trap. Sure enough, the next night around 2:30 a.m., I heard something. I whispered to Brook and he said it was Gus Gus in the trap. We slowly got up and peaked in the corner. Gus Gus was trapped! Brook took him to the very back corner of our back yard and released him with his butterscotch candy. Hopefully, he has found a new home and isn't on his way back to our house.

Random Things

Last week, I got to check something off my bucket list. I got to see George Strait in concert with my dad. It was so awesome!

I attempted my mom's buttermilk bundt cake last weekend, and I was actually successful. That cake is dangerous!

I recently started watching Downton Abby on PBS and I absolutely love it. Great show!

Movie Marathons & First Date Music

During our week off from work, we had a couple of movie marathons. We started with the Harry Potter movies. Then, we moved on to The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

After our first week back at work, I was still in movie marathon mode, so we watched the Karate Kid movies last weekend. The first Karate Kid is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. My brother and I used to quote it all the time. I found this awesome shirt and couldn't resist ordering it. Anyone who grew up in the 80s and enjoyed Karate Kid can appreciate this. I also wanted to buy the Kobra Kai Never Die t-shirt, Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy t-shirt, and the Miyagi Do Karate t-shirts, but I figured that might be going a bit overboard. We also found out that Karate Kid III was nomintated for worst picture, worst actor, and worst supporting actor. haha! It is very bad, but I loved laughing at it.

Different subject...I was driving home the other night and started thinking about my first date with Brook and the music we listened to. He had a six disc cd player in his old Crowne Victoria. I love hearing the story about how he chose the music. We really didn't know each other at all, so he kind of just had to pick some stuff and hope I liked it. Anytime I listen to any of these albums, it takes me back to when we first started dating. I love all of them. I tried to create a playlist, but I can't seem to figure it out.

The Killers- Mr. Brightside

Muse- Apocalypse Please
Album: Absolution

Morphine- The Night

A Weekend Alone

Brook decided to mosey on down to Dallas for the weekend, so I was a single gal this weekend. Friday night, I ate dinner with my friend Rachel and went to Walgreens & bought some random things. They have so much Halloween stuff! I somehow made it out of there without buying any of it. I got home and decided that I might as well just go to bed. I started watching Sense and Sensibility. I've probably fallen asleep to this movie at least 100 times. Really.

Vito slept with me Friday night. He normally isn't allowed to sleep in our bedroom, but when I'm alone, I let him. He woke me up very early shivering, so I had to cover him.

Saturday morning, I drove to Ft. Smith and got my hair did. I listened to some of the game on the radio on my way back. I made it back in time to finish watching the game. Poor Vito didn't understand why I was yelling at the tv. After that stressful event, I watched the Auburn/ S. Carolina game. Then, I fed my brother's dogs, and got some dinner. I have been looking forward to this particular dinner all week. When Brook told me he would be gone, my mind immediately thought of Braum's. So, this is what I came home with. Cheeseburger deluxe, fries, cherry limeade, and M&M mix. AWESOME!!
Then I settled in on the couch and watched I Capture the Castle. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Vito and I hung out on the deck for a little while after the game. This pic is out of order. Sunday, I cleaned, did homework, and gave Vito a bath. It was a nice weekend alone, but I was very happy to have Brook back home.

Pumpkin Bars

Last week, it cooled down, and I just had this urge to make something with pumpkin in it. So, I decided to try some pumpkin bars. They turned out perfectly and they were super easy to make. I did make a huge mess in the kitchen with all the flour and powdered sugar, though. Aren't you supposed to make a big mess, though? Here's the recipe:

Pumpkin Bars

2 cups flour

2 tsp. baking powder

2 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. salt

4 eggs, beaten

1 16 oz. can pumpkin

1 1/3 cup sugar

1 cup cooking oil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine beaten eggs, sugar, pumpkin, and oil until well blended. Add dry ingredients and mix together until smooth. Spread batter into ungreased baking pan (15x11x1). I used a cookie sheet. Bake in oven for 25-35 minutes.

Cream Cheese Frosting

Beat together the following ingredients until light and fluffy.

1 3 oz. package cream cheese

1 tsp. vanilla

1/4 cup margarine

Add 2 cups powdered sugar, beating until smooth. Spread icing over cooled cake. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. I tried 3 different kinds of nuts (pecans, walnuts, & macadamias). I think the pecans complimented the pumpkin the best.

Swooning over here

It seems like not too long ago, I blogged about Dexter and how Michael C. Hall was easy on the eyes. I have moved on to an older man. Kevin McKidd. He plays Dr. Owen Hunt on Grey's Anatomy. Excuse me while I swoon. Could it be the red hair and blue eyes?? :) Yes, we started Grey's Anatomy. We've never watched it and wanted to get into a good tv show this summer. We have 14 episodes left and then we'll be caught up to the most current season.

Oliver's Hospital Adventure

Saturday afternoon, Oliver, the fat black cat, started acting very strange. He was panting heavily and acting like he needed to pee in the kitchen sink. That was very strange for him as he occasionally sleeps in the sink. Yes, I know that may sound strange to some, but it is true. Anyway, i called the emergency clinic and they told us to go ahead and bring him in because they wouldn't know how bad off he was until a vet examined him. We got him in the crate, which is somewhat comical since he's rather plump. We got all checked in at the clinic and they took him to the back. I was so upset, I didn't really remember what all the vet told us. I was relying on Brook to listen and remember everything. And he did. Oliver had urinary blockage and needed a catheter and all this other business. He had stay at the clinic until Monday morning. I hated that he had to stay there. I missed him a lot. Little Bit hollered all night long. I guess he missed him too. We picked up Oliver on Monday morning and took him to our regular vet. He wanted to keep him overnight until they could remove his catheter. We got to take him home on Tuesday. Well, ever since he's been home, Little Bit has been growling and hissing at him and just being a little pill. He's also been pouting and going under our bed. Brook suspects that Little Bit got used to being the only cat for a few days and now he's being territorial. I kind of get it. He is an animal, after all. But still! These are two cats who love each other. They cuddle, play, and sleep together. At least they did. I've told Little Bit he's going to have to just get over it. Oliver isn't going anywhere again, hopefully!! And for the record, the Emergency Vet Clinic is EXPENSIVE! Here is evidence that they do love each other.

DIY Necklace Hanger

I really wanted something to hang my necklaces on, so we got the idea to just get some cute knobs, spray paint, and scrap wood. And, voila! Brook is great at DIY projects!

The CrossFit Post

Let's see, where to begin? I thought I was in fairly good shape. I was WRONG. All of my life, I've been an active person. I took dance for 15 years. I did gymnastics. I did hot yoga. I did Yoga Booty Ballet. I did Jillian's 30 day shred. Like I said, I thought I was in fairly good shape. A little over a year ago, my best friends started going to this place called CrossFit. I knew it was some sort of a gym, but that was about it. When we went to dinner, it was almost all they talked about. CrossFit this, CrossFit that! I was always intrigued by what they were talking about, but I didn't really understand everything. I loved hearing about the other CrossFitters. I loved hearing about how they were losing inches and getting into better shape. Naturally, I felt left out. I finally couldn't take it anymore and they convinced me to try it for a week. My first day was March 21st. I was introduced to the pull up, with a band of course, because not many people can do a pull up unassisted on the very first try. I also did front squats with a bar. The workout itself wasn't that bad. The trainer scaled me back of course. Well, early the next morning, around 1:00 a.m., I woke up not able to straighten my arms. I had never done that many pullups in my life. The first week was brutle. I've never been so sore. I thought Jillian made me sore. This did not even compare. I could barely walk. Fastword to today-- it has been almost 4 months since I started CrossFit and I will say that it is the HARDEST fitness endeavor I've ever tried. I feel so much better physically and mentally. I am now in the best shape I've ever been. I will say this though. You can think you are in good shape, but then when you're gasping for air b/c it is 100 degrees outside and you're running (or jogging), you DO NOT feel like you are in good shape. You just feel like shit. Pardon my french. It is difficult to write about this b/c I feel like some of this would be better explained in person, so I guess if you see me, ask me about CrossFit, and I will talk your ear off. Apparently, this happens to people who start CrossFit and they become a bit obsessed. I have become obsessed. I am one of the people who check the CrossFit blog like crazy every night to see what the next day's WOD will be. WOD means "workout of the day." I have become so obsessed that I will literally talk to myself in the car on the way there. As in, I tell myself that the WOD is going to be so hard and it is going to suck, but I have to do it. This started when I did "Karen" for the first time. Karen is 150 wallballs. Wallballs aren't fun. Ask any CrossFitter. I didn't want to go, but secretly, I really did. I wanted to try to do it. I wanted to go, so I could say that I did it. And I did. And it was awful. It was so hard. But, I did it. Same case with "Murph." I wanted to try it. I knew it would be awful. But I did it. Then I got really mad, b/c I realized I didn't complete everything, but that's another story. I did a pullup without a band. Without a band!!! I've completed the "Filthy 50" twice now. My hands have ripped from doing K2E (knees to elbows). Rips hurt. As in, you scream bloody murder when you stick your hands in hot salty bath water. I have been in the middle of a WOD and thought to myself, "Why did I come today? I should've just stayed home. Something is wrong with me for wanting to put myself through this!" Then I push through. I keep going. I tell myself that I will finish. Then....it's over. Sweet rest. I get to lie down in front of the fan and talk to the other people who also pushed through the pain. I don't know how else to word it. You think you can't do something. But then your body surprises you. Your mind surprises you. You feel like you can do anything. I love it. I simply love it.

Greece Vacation

These are just a few of the pics from our Greece trip. Brook posted a ton on facebook. We went to Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete. Santorini was the most beautiful place I've ever seen in my life. Watching the sunset was indescribable. I want to go back so bad. If I could move Vito, La Huerta, and my friends there, I'd stay.
